About INDUS-X

In June 2023, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and Indian Ministry of Defense (MoD) launched the India-U.S. Defense Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X), guided by a bilateral collaboration agenda. INDUS-X advances the commitment by the U.S. and Indian national security advisors to build a defense innovation bridge between the two countries under the initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET). INDUS-X serves as an innovation bridge, fostering partnerships among defense companies of all sizes from the U.S. and India, alongside incubators, accelerators, investors, and universities, backed by the support of both the U.S. and Indian governments.

Advisory Bodies

Purpose: The co-chairs of the Senior Advisory Group meet regularly to discuss policies, lines of effort, and challenges under INDUS-X to continue strengthening partnerships between the U.S. and Indian defense ecosystems.

Co-Chairs:

DOD DASD SSEA: Ms. Lori Abele is the Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for South and Southeast Asia. In this role, she serves as the principal advisor to senior leadership within the Department of Defense for all policy matters pertaining to development and implementation of defense strategies and plans for the region. Her area of responsibility includes bilateral security relations with India and all other South Asian countries, excepting Afghanistan, and with the nations of Southeast Asia.

DOD DIU Director: Mr. Doug Beck. As DIU Director, Doug oversees efforts to accelerate the Department's adoption of commercial technology throughout the military and serves as a senior advisor to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense on technology innovation, competition, and strategic impact.

MOD CEO iDEX: Shri Vivek Virmani. Vivek Virmani is the Defence Excellence (iDEX) Chief Operating Officer of the Indian Ministry of Defense.

Purpose: The Senior Leaders Forum (SLF) comprises venture capital, private equity, commercial, academia, and government leaders, to discuss challenges and produce recommendations for policymakers.

Joint IMPACT Challenges

Since June 2023, U.S. and Indian government officials, defense companies, investors, accelerators, and universities have collaborated through INDUS-X to accelerate defense technology innovation in the United States and India. Primary achievements under INDUS-X to date include the Joint Impact Challenges, in which the U.S. DoD’s Defense Innovation Unit and Indian MoD’s Innovations for Defense Excellence (iDEX) designed, launched, and selected winners from companies who competed to identify commercial technology solutions that address critical warfighter challenges.
