Dec 5, 2024 (Mountain View, CA ) — Artificial or manipulated content containing human subjects – often known as “deepfakes” – is generated by sophisticated computational techniques. This technology is increasingly common and credible, posing a significant threat to the Department of Defense (DoD), especially as U.S. adversaries use deepfakes for deception, fraud, disinformation, and other malicious activities. As synthetic multimedia content proliferates, the DoD needs detection and attribution capabilities that can keep pace with the rapidly evolving tools, techniques, and models used to create highly convincing and challenging-to-detect manipulated multimedia.
Hive was one of the initial companies selected to prototype their deepfake detection and attribution technology, delivering innovative solutions to enhance the DoD's ability to identify and counter synthetic media threats with precision and speed. Hive’s solution was evaluated from an open, competitive pool of 36 submissions.

If the synthetic media detection and attribution capabilities in this effort prove effective, it will mark an important advancement in combating the growing threat of deepfakes and manipulated multimedia content. The tools and methodologies developed through this initiative have the potential to be adapted for broader use, addressing not only defense-specific challenges but also safeguarding civilian institutions against disinformation, fraud, and deception.
