The Problem This Solution Solves
DoD has a critical need for improved, large scale, situational awareness satisfied by less expensive, day/night, all-weather imaging satellites capable of filling gaps in space-based reconnaissance. This capability should facilitate timely analysis of emergent threats; allowing the Joint Force to deploy the right capability for a given situation, flex and adapt to the threat, respond to the situation and be unpredictable across an increasingly contested space environment.
The Solution
Capella demonstrated commercial-based, micro-satellite technology capable of observing during the day, night, and all-weather conditions via synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite technology. The size and cost of individual satellites provide flexibility for launch and replacement allowing the DoD to leverage the commercialization and peacetime use via data service agreements. Data provided from the payload is provided in a format capable for ingestion into a cloud-based computing architecture for subsequent machine learning, object detection analysis.
