The Problem This Solution Solves

The Department of Defense (DoD) leverages robotic process automation (RPA) tools to track and resolve discrepancies in enterprise resource management systems. These tools require well-defined rules and logic processes as well as substantial human intervention to continuously update and refine.

The Solution

In September 2020, the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) partnered with Summit2Sea, a technology firm that specializes in intelligent automation, to develop a data-driven ML solution that automates purchase order number identification, unmatched transactions (UMTs) correction, and fraud and abuse detection within the DoD’s financial information systems. The UMT solution, which transitioned in February 2022, increased overall UMT error detection and decreased the correction rate from two hours to two minutes per use case. The dynamic ML models delivered by Summit2Sea delivered between 92% and 96% detection accuracy, depending on the defense agency, potentially saving the Department millions of dollars in annual labor costs.
